TMD/TMJ

Dr. Segal's treatment philosophy is conservative and non-surgical for TMD, head, neck and facial pain. Once a patient is properly diagnosed, Dr. Segal may use selected treatments such as: custom orthotic (splint), spray & stretch, nutrition counseling or referral, energex (pulsed radiofrequency tissue stimulator), iontophoresis, trigger point injection and jaw, head and neck exercises.

Custom fitted orthotics - also known as a splint - are usually part of Dr. Segal's TMD treatment. A splint helps eliminate muscle spasm and the pain that occurs with bite imbalance. It also stabilizes the TM joints. The purpose of the splint is to balance the bite so the teeth, muscles and joints all work in harmony - without strain or pain.

  • After Dr. Segal begins treatment, here are some of the steps you can take to are minimize your TMD condition:
  • Manage stress. Get stress counseling, if necessary.
  • Apply heat for sore muscles/cold to swollen areas.
  • Begin a regular exercise program.
  • Avoid chewing gum or eating crunchy, chewy foods.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet.

Many times, Dr. Segal suggests supplemental care and referrals to other health professionals. Dr. Segal treats each case individually.
